Dutch farmers group vows to continue protests, calls into question "science" behind nitrogen fertilizer ban
Agractie, an organization of Dutch farmers protesting the government's policy mandating the reduced use of nitrogen fertilizers,
is planning fresh protests as it calls the science behind the green agenda into question.
The protests started after the Netherlands mandated its farmers to stop using nitrogen fertilizers in a bid to halve nitrogen emissions by 2030. The Dutch government claimed that significantly lowering nitrogen emissions would improve the state of the environment. (Related:

"There is no scientific evidence for that," said Bart Kemp, one of the leaders of Agractie, during an interview with public broadcaster
Ongehoord Nederland. Kemp added that the farmers' movement remains "motivated by injustice to take action."
Member of Parliament Gideon van Meijeren of the conservative Forum for Democracy Party noted that all of the government's policy, apart from being based on junk science, is a cover for the true goal of expropriating land away from farmers to build more houses and commercial developments.
"It's taking away land, it's land grabbing for a different agenda than the one being proposed," said Van Meijeren.
Dutch government arrests protesting farmers
In recent weeks, Dutch police
have arrested over 100 farmers who opposed the government's green agenda.
This data came from Dutch public broadcaster
NOS Journaal, who also noted that around a quarter of the arrests did not occur during the period when the alleged offenses took place. According to the report, Dutch police took the time to investigate the supposed crimes and track down the individual protesters responsible.
Many of the protesters arrested by the Dutch police ended up being remanded in police custody for considerable periods of time.
Dutch police have come under fire in recent weeks as they have
taken increasingly more violent actions to suppress the farmers' protests, including shooting a boy without sufficient justification and beating protesters with their batons.
Despite the police crackdowns, organizations like Agractie are not backing down and have instead called on farmers and sympathizers all over the country to ramp up demonstrations.
"It's really coming down to it now," said Erik Luiten, a director of Agractie. "We have to persevere with our actions."
"Whether that is a public-friendly one, as soon with the start of the [Vuelta a Espana bicycle race], or actions that are sharper, they have to take place," continued Luiten. "Sometimes with as little effort as possible, because we are all busy, but with a great effect."
Agractie and other farmers' organizations are calling on protesters to block busy roads to make a massive impact even with only a handful of demonstrators. Police have come down hard on this practice, arresting many who have attempted to block roads and even those only suspected of participating in the protest tactic.
Negotiations between the government and the farmers' groups have similarly broken down, with farmers' representatives calling Prime Minister Mark Rutte "disappointing."
Kemp also criticized lead negotiator and former deputy prime minister, Johan Remkes, for inviting over 100 parties to the negotiations. Many of the other attendees have no stake in the protests and some are representatives of environmental organizations who are preparing lawsuits against the farmers.
