Ryan Wesley Routh, the second shooter who attempted to kill President Donald Trump in September 2024, now faces additional state charges following his failed assassination of the chief executive. Florida Attorney General (AG) James Uthmeier announced this during an appearance on the Fox News program "Fox & Friends" Thursday, April 10. According to the Sunshine State's top attorney, the 59-year-old Routh now faces other charges – including attempted first-degree murder and terrorism. Uthmeier, who took over the seat vacated by Sen. Ashley Moody (R-FL), slammed the previous Democratic administration during his "Fox and Friends" appearance. "[Former President] Joe Biden and the Democrats did everything they could to drag their feet and refuse to cooperate," he shared. The Florida AG also praised the "transparent and cooperative" Justice Department under the second Trump administration, in particular U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel. Prior to Uthmeier's announcement, Routh was slapped with federal gun charges stemming from his Sept. 15, 2024 failed assassination attempt on Trump. The 59-year-old positioned himself near the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida armed with an illegally obtained rifle. Secret Service agents spotted him before Trump arrive, prompting an exchange of gunfire and forcing Routh to flee. According to authorities, he was later arrested in Martin County with multiple burner phones, fake IDs, stolen license plates and a handwritten escape plan.

The new state charges also follow a protracted dispute with federal officials over jurisdiction, which Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sought to counter with an executive order allowing state prosecution. Meanwhile, Routh's defense lawyers recently filed motions alleging witness coercion. They argued that law enforcement used "impermissibly suggestive" tactics when interviewing an eyewitness. Routh nevertheless pleaded not guilty to the federal charges against him. His trial is scheduled for Sept. 8; if convicted, he faces a life sentence. Court documents further allege Routh sought military-grade weapons – including a rocket-propelled grenade – from a Ukrainian contact, writing that Trump was "not good for Ukraine." Routh's animus toward Trump appears to stem largely from the real estate mogul's resolve to end the conflict between Kyiv and Moscow. The 59-year old reportedly traveled to Ukraine to recruit soldiers to fight the Russians. At one point, he even attempted to aid Afghan refugees travel to Ukraine via Iran for that purpose. Routh's failed assassination attempt was the second one against Trump in 2024. In July, Thomas Matthew Crooks attempted to kill the then-candidate a Butler, Pennsylvania rally. Trump suffered an injury after the bullet grazed his right ear, but former Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company Chief Corey Comperatore was killed as a result. As Routh's legal battles unfold, Florida's pursuit of state charges signifies an intensified effort to hold him accountable.
