Yemen's Houthi movement claimed on Monday, Dec. 16, to have successfully launched a hypersonic ballistic missile targeting Tel Aviv. Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree announced the strike with the missile named "Palestine 2" in a televised address, asserting that the operation had achieved its objectives. The strike is part of the Houthis ongoing missile and drone attacks on Israel, which the group has been targeting since October last year following Israel's ongoing military actions and genocide against Gaza. The group has also blockaded the Red Sea, targeting shipping heading into Israel in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the missile launch and claimed it was intercepted by its air defenses before it even entered Israeli territory. Despite this claim, the missile strike activated air raid sirens all over Central Israel and Tel Aviv. The IDF claimed this was a precautionary measure due to concerns about falling shrapnel from the intercepted missile. Houthi drone and missile campaign against Israel ongoing

This marks the latest in a series of attacks by the Houthis on Israel. Since November, the group has launched at least six ballistic missiles and five drones targeting Israeli territory. In a separate incident a week prior, a Houthi drone struck a building in the city of Yavne, directly to the south of Tel Aviv, causing significant property damage but no casualties. The IDF later acknowledged that the drone had been mistakenly flagged as non-threatening, resulting in no sirens being activated. The Houthis have vowed to continue their military operations against Israel until the Israeli military halts its actions in Gaza. Israel has imposed a blockade on Gaza, which has led to severe humanitarian conditions, including food shortages and hunger. The United Nations and human rights groups have accused Israel of committing atrocities in Gaza, including potential genocide. In response to the Houthi attacks, Israel has carried out air strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. The most recent strikes occurred in July and September of this year.
