Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who has been chosen by Vice President Kamala Harris to be her running mate on the Democratic presidential ticket, is a staunch advocate of climate alarmism. Climate Depot founder Marc Morano noted in an Aug. 7 piece that Harris' stance on fossil fuels and fracking appears to be inconsistent. However, Walz is no better as he wants to cancel all fossil fuel production. The governor of the North Star State has also silently emerged as one of America's most forceful proponents for dealing with climate change. According to a report by POLITICO, it took Walz all of a month after being sworn into a second gubernatorial term to sign a sweeping clean energy bill – one of the Midwest's most progressive climate policies and just one of many he signed while in office. Under this new measure, utilities must produce 100 percent carbon-free energy by 2040 – a Herculean task given the unreliable nature of renewables like wind and solar. (Related: Kamala's pick for VP is a warning sign that she intends to continue Biden’s FAILED energy policies.) The proposal was intensely opposed by Republicans, but managed to pass in the state legislature along straight party lines after Democrats flipped the Minnesota Senate in 2022. One of the measure's many GOP opponents is North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, also an energy policy advisor to the campaign of former President Donald Trump. The governor of the Peace Garden State has since threatened to sue Minnesota over its energy policies. But prior to the November 2022 midterm election, the Minnesota governor had to advocate climate reforms on his own via executive order. This he did in 2021 by looking to California, with the North Star State adopting the Golden State's clean cars rule. The complete ban on new gas-powered car sales endured a legal challenge from the Minnesota Auto Dealers Association.

Walz hates fossil fuel cars, but rides in one of them

In 2022, Walz's climate change plan required raising the share of electric cars on Minnesota roads to 20 percent by 2030, from the present one percent. He has also suggested entirely prohibiting liquid transportation fuels by 2050. Despite the governor's policies against internal combustion vehicles, he is still using a gas-powered SUV. Mankato, Minnesota newspaper the Free Press attempted to shed light on the issue, but did not receive a clear reply from the governor's office. Walz's office simply said the governor is required to travel in a protection vehicle rather than a personal vehicle. Walz led the way for more progressive energy policies in the Midwest. During the selection process for Harris' potential running mates, the governor became the popular choice among activists due to his clean electricity bill. "I have to tell you, when I hear people say, 'You're moving too fast' – we can't move too fast when it comes to addressing climate change," Walz said during the clean energy bill's signing into law last year. "This idea of waiting is a luxury we do not have, and Minnesotans do not have." This led to U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) – Trump's pick for vice president – branding Walz as the most liberal vice-presidential candidate ever. The lawyer-turned-lawmaker described Walz as a "San Francisco-style liberal," with his remarks sharing similarities to the city where Harris served as district attorney.
