Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MID), has warned that Ukraine is spreading terrorism worldwide. She issued this warning during an interview with Sputnik Radio on Aug. 7, a day after Ukrainian troops launched an incursion into Russia's Kursk region. The area borders Ukraine's Sumy Oblast (province) in the west. "This is an act of terrorism," said Zakharova. "It was obviously directed against peaceful people. There is no doubt about that." According to her, those in power in Kyiv have turned Ukraine into a "terrorist gang" doing the dirty works for Western nations and their "deep state structures." She also asked what it would take to convince the American people that the U.S. government was sponsoring terrorism by continuing to fund Ukraine. "Things will get worse in terms of Ukrainian terrorism spreading across the planet. It's not a joke." (Related: Russia informs U.S. ambassador "We are no longer at peace" in chilling message following Crimea attack carried out with US-made weapons.) The MID spokeswoman also cited a deepfake video of Kursk Acting Gov. Aleksey Smirnov urging all men in the region to enlist at conscription centers and arm themselves as evidence that Ukraine's military activities were primarily meant to disturb civilians. According to Russia Today (RT), the video was actually based on a legitimate statement by Smirnov on Aug. 6 that called on citizens to remain calm and prioritize their safety. "Ukrainian troops have been launching attacks against settlements in the border areas of Kursk as they try to push their way inside Russian territory," RT reported, adding that Smirnov reported on Aug. 6 that the civilian death toll from the hostilities had increased. Aside from the intrusion by Ukrainian troops, a kamikaze drone reportedly hit an ambulance near the town of Sudzha in Kursk. The strike killed two – the ambulance's driver and an elderly paramedic – and injured a doctor, Smirnov said. The following day, local health officials reported that at least 28 people had been injured by Ukrainian strikes.

Mali severs ties with Ukraine over July ambush

During her interview with Sputnik Radio, Zakharova mentioned the decision by the West African nation of Mali to sever diplomatic ties with Kyiv. This followed an ambush on Russian military contractors and Malian troops by Tuareg rebels. According to a separate RT report, Tuareg fighters ambushed a military convoy in late July carrying Malian troops and members of the private military contractor Wagner Group formerly led by Yevgeny Prigozhin. The attack that happened in the northeastern village of Tinzaouaten, near Mali's border with Algeria, killed scores of soldiers and destroyed multiple trucks. Andrey Yusov, spokesman for the Ukrainian Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) remarked during an appearance on Ukrainian TV that his agents had provided "necessary information" to the Tuareg rebels. The intelligence provided by the HUR allowed the rebels to conduct a successful military operation, Yusov continued, adding that there would be "more to come." But this admission did not sit well with the Malian government, which described it as support for terrorism in Africa's Sahel region. It expressed "deep shock" at Yusov's remarks, also announcing a series of measures – including legal action – in response. According to Bamako, these comments "constitute acts of terrorism and advocacy of terrorism." "Mali fully endorses the diagnosis made by the Russian Federation, which for years has been warning the world of the neo-Nazi and villainous character of the Ukrainian authorities, now allies of international terrorism and shows no willingness to implement the Ukrainian people's aspirations for peace and stability," the Malian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. In response, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied Kyiv's involvement. It also lamented Bamako's "hasty" decision to sever diplomatic ties. But Mali wasn't alone in its condemnation of Ukraine, as its eastern neighbor Niger also severed ties with Kyiv. Head over to Terrorism.news for similar stories.
