9 House Democrats tried to nix Secret Service protection for Trump months before assassination attempt

Nine Democratic members of the House of Representatives had sought to strip former President Donald Trump of his Secret Service protection just months before his assassination attempt. In April, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) introduced the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act or DISGRACED Former Protectees Act, a bill that would terminate Secret Service protection for former presidents convicted of federal or state felonies. (Related: There’s another culprit in the Trump murder attempt.) The proposed legislation, co-sponsored by Reps. Troy Carter (D-LA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Frederica Wilson (D-FL), Yvete Clarke (D-NY), Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), Joyce Beatty (D-OH) and Steve Cohen (D-TN), sought to ensure that "those who have been sentenced to prison following a conviction for a Federal or State felony" would no longer receive Secret Service protection. In short, only prison authorities would be responsible for their security. Thompson claimed the necessity of updating the law to prevent protective status from translating into special treatment for convicted individuals, including former presidents. "Unfortunately, current law doesn't anticipate how Secret Service protection would impact the felony prison sentence of a protectee – even a former President," Thompson said. "It is regrettable that it has come to this, but this previously unthought-of scenario could become our reality. Therefore, it is necessary for us to be prepared and update the law so the American people can be assured that protective status does not translate into special treatment – and that those who are sentenced to prison will indeed serve the time required of them." This plan to nix Trump of his Secret Service protection came a few months before the assassination attempt on July 13. Fortunately, the proposed legislation was not able to pass through the Republican-controlled House.

Republicans condemn Thompson and his fellow Democrats in their plan to leave Trump unprotected

After the failure to pass the DISGRACED Former Protectees Act and the unsuccessful assassination of the former president, a staffer for Thompson reportedly made a now-deleted Facebook post suggesting that the now-deceased 20-year-old shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks "needed shooting lessons" to succeed. "I don't condone violence but please get you some shooting lessons so you don't miss next time oops that wasn't me saying that," Jacqueline Marsaw, Thompson's case manager and field director, posted on Facebook on the same day of the attack. Thompson already gave his statement about the incident and expressed regret over it. He then clarified that the staffer was no longer in his employment. But Republicans have condemned the Democrats' efforts to strip Trump of his Secret Service detail. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), stressed the potential danger of such a move, calling it a "sobering reminder" of the impact of political rhetoric and actions. "I can only imagine what could have happened had House Democrats been successful in their attempts to terminate his Secret Service detail. This should be a sobering reminder to them and others on the Left that their rhetoric and actions matter," McCaul said. "Our democratic process will not be deterred by this baseless act, as President Trump so powerfully demonstrated. Millions of Americans will never forget seeing his fist in the air – a symbol of hope, courage and strength in the face of despicable evil."
