Google's Gemini AI has claimed that former U.S. President Barack Obama is a Muslim, the latest in a string of absurd answers. According to The Sun, one screenshot showed a user asking how many Muslim presidents has the U.S. had. The AI chatbot responded: "The U.S. has had one Muslim president, Barack Hussein Obama." Its answer incidentally cited the website of Oxford University Press about a book on American Christianity. But the 44th U.S. president is actually a Christian, which proves that the Gemini AI is lying about the former leader. According to a March 2010 article by Newsweek, Obama was baptized in the early 1990s at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Obama being a Muslim isn't the only absurd answer Gemini has spewed out. It has also mentioned several bizarre tips, including the use of glue on pizza if cheese doesn't stick to it. Gemini has also advised users to eat "one rock a day," arguing that the practice is reportedly "healthy." (Related: Google AI says calling communism "evil" is "harmful and misleading.") Earlier this year, Google was forced to apologize after Gemini's image generator refused to create images of White people even when explicitly asked. When prompted to generate images of America's Founding Fathers – all White males – the AI instead spewed out women and people from ethnic minorities. It also created images of Asian and Black Nazi soldiers, as well as historically inaccurate Vikings. These blunders forced the Big Tech firm into admitting that its woke AI technology was "missing the mark" on historical facts.

Generative AI is "experimental," yet filled with fabrications

News of the absurd answer came as the Big Tech company began rolling out AI-generated answers at the top of its search engine. The feature called  AI Overview is being rolled out across the entire U.S. for now, with plans to make it available to more than one billion search users by the end of the year. "Google's AI bot comes up with results based on web pages across the internet, but it appears to be mixing up information from jokes on social [media] platforms and unreliable sites," The Sun wrote. Given this, several users took to social media to share a wave of incorrect responses and call attention to the lies spewed out by the Gemini AI. "You should take this 'AI Overview' feature offline right now. It is thoroughly dangerous," one concerned user wrote on X. A second user didn't mince any words with their condemnation, calling Google's AI "dumb." The search engine giant meanwhile defended itself, pointing to a label on its search page indicating that "generative AI is experimental." "The examples we've seen are generally uncommon queries, and aren't representative of most people's experiences. The vast majority ofAI Overviews provide high-quality information, with links to dig deeper on the web. We conducted extensive testing before launching this new experience, and will use these isolated examples as we continue to refine our systems overall."
