Report reveals Google has INTERFERED in U.S. elections for 16 years
Big Tech firm Google
has reportedly interfered with U.S. elections for 16 years, according to a new report.
The Media Research Center's (MRC) Free Speech America Division was responsible
for the report, according to
Breitbart News. It accused the search engine giant of systematically utilizing "its immense technological prowess to sway electoral outcomes in favor of left-leaning candidates." The MRC's report cited 41 instances beginning in 2008 to back it up.
In 2008, Google appeared to select former President Barack Obama – then a U.S. senator for Illinois – against the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). Those backing former First Lady Hillary Clinton were targeted, with writers who wrote blogs critical of Obama being suspended.
This trend continued in 2012, during Obama's second term. The search engine giant favored Obama over Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), the Republican presidential nominee that year. Google also refused to correct a "Google bomb" that smeared former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), who was the leading GOP candidate until Romney's nomination.
In 2016, Google then supported Clinton by "using its algorithm to exclude potentially damaging autofill results" for her while not doing the same for former President Donald Trump and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). Four years later in 2020, Google also suppressed news sources critical of President Joe Biden – then running for his first term – and reportedly blocked GOP fundraising emails from reaching users' inboxes. The MRC report also pointed out that Google's interference is also blatantly visible ahead of the November 2024 elections. "
Google has been aiding Biden, burying in its search results the campaign websites of every one of his significant opponents," it said. Those victimized by this interference include Trump and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. – who has decried the Democratic National Committee for rigging the Democratic primaries in favor of Biden.
Google's anti-conservative bias exposed for the world to see
"Google's impact on elections has surged dramatically in recent years," the report stated. "Google is making good on its 2016 promise never to let conservatives win again. While its interference was first evident in 2008, its meddling has turned into an organizational mission to ensure that its candidates win on Election Day."
Aside from interfering via search results, the MRC report also pointed out that Google's news site removed all links to right-leaning media outlets. In contrast, the tech giant generously linked to left-leaning media outlets related to Trump, Biden, or elections. The MRC report cited a 2022 study by AllSides, a company that rates news outlets for political bias.
According to AllSides, 88 percent of articles about Trump were left-leaning while 68 percent of articles about Biden were left-leaning. For the topic of elections, 96 percent of articles were left-leaning, while zero percent of articles were right-leaning for all three topics of note. Moreover, the data from AllSides showed that Google News linked to left-leaning media outlets 10 to 20 times more often than it linked to right-leaning media outlets across all topics between 2018 and 2023.
Google has adamantly refused the allegations, asserting that it has implemented robust safeguards to ensure unbiased and accurate searches. A spokesperson for the tech giant told
Fox News: "We have a clear business incentive to keep everyone using our products, so we have no desire to make them biased or inaccurate."
Responding to the MRC's report, the spokesperson continued: "There is absolutely nothing new here. Just a recycled list of baseless, inaccurate complaints that have been debunked by third parties and many that failed in the courts."
The report nevertheless urged Americans to "stop using Google products,
particularly Google Search, and instead opt for one of the many alternatives. From our research, alternatives appear to produce better, less biased results."
