ISIS-affiliated smuggler helped migrants illegally enter the U.S. via Mexico
The
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating
a migrant smuggler with ties to the Islamic State (ISIS) who helped more than a dozen migrants enter the United States illegally
through the southern border with Mexico.
The investigation started when U.S. intelligence officials discovered
a smuggling network based in Turkey that brought people mainly from Uzbekistan into the U.S., with one of the smugglers used by this network having ties to ISIS.
The FBI noted that it has not uncovered any evidence of a specific ISIS plot, and
National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson added that authorities have not uncovered any evidence that the illegals smuggled into the country by the network have any ties to ISIS or any other extremist organizations. (Related:

Watson further noted that the White House is closely scrutinizing several of the illegals that were smuggled in by the ISIS-linked individual as possible criminal threats. These individuals who "fit the profile" of those assisted by the smuggling network are already being placed in rapid deportation proceedings and "thoroughly vetted."
About 15 of the roughly 120 migrants from Uzbekistan smuggled into the U.S. by the ISIS-linked individual fit this profile, and the FBI is reportedly trying to locate all of them.
"I'm not so sure I believe it's raising alarm bells across the government because I think most of the people in the government now are – other than a few good civil servants here and there – most of them that have any real authority are knowingly allowing this to happen – and apparently are in favor of it," said TV personality and political commentator Brannon Howse. "[This] begs the question: What are these people doing here? Who's paid for them to be smuggled here? And what orders are they waiting for, and from whom and when?"
Biden scrambling to respond to renewed threat by ISIS-linked militants
Top members of President Joe Biden's cabinet have reportedly been informed and have kickstarted a flurry of urgent meetings with top national security and administration officials.
The identification of an ISIS-linked individual working to smuggle migrants into the U.S. comes at a time when migration into the country is reaching record-high levels. Between October 2022 and July 2023, nearly two million migrants were encountered at the U.S.-Mexico border. Of these, at least 216 were identified as being part of U.S. watchlists for potential links to terrorism.
This revelation also comes at a time when Republicans and other conservatives in the U.S. continue to strongly criticize
the Biden administration for the lack of security at the southern border. The leadership of at least two committees in the House of Representatives has already reportedly been informed of the incident.
Furthermore, the law enforcement and intelligence communities are expressing serious concerns that there is an increasing number of migrants coming from Uzbekistan and other Central Asian nations, a region that isn't normally known to be a major source of immigrants. They note that this fact alone should have immediately been a cause for alarm for the Biden administration.
But for some Biden administration officials who spoke with media outlets, the
discovery of the smuggling network is proof that the border is secure. They claim that the administration's intelligence community was able to identify a particularly dangerous group of migrants and intelligence agencies collaborated with the FBI on an investigation that allegedly determined that they did not pose a threat.
"We continually assess our security architecture to ensure that we are best poised to respond to threats to the homeland," said Watson. "Moreover, we will continue to constantly recalibrate our screening, vetting and processing of those encountered entering the United States to ensure that we are taking into account the most up-to-date information at our disposal and with an unyielding commitment to protecting Americans and the homeland from the full range of potential threats."
