Kristi Leigh: House Speaker McCarthy "in a straitjacket" after agreeing to concessions
Independent news host Kristi Leigh remarked that House Speaker-elect and California congressman Kevin McCarthy
is in a straitjacket after agreeing to concessions that secured him the third highest position in the land.
"Enough concessions were made to put McCarthy in a straitjacket," she said in a recent episode of her podcast. "Those include reducing the number of members needed to initiate a speaker recall to one, and limiting McCarthy and his super PAC's (political action committee) meddling in the House GOP primaries."
The former
KMPH-TV anchor said McCarthy is officially transitioning to his new role as speaker, which took a historic 15 rounds of voting. The California congressman sealed the deal on Jan. 7 after America First lawmakers from the Republican Party caused the delay.
She pointed out, however, that reservations about the new House speaker are justified because Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell gave his support to McCarthy. The newly-elected leader of the lower chamber of Congress also appears to be well-respected by the World Economic Forum and well-funded by money from the disgraced FTX cryptocurrency exchange. 27 GOP lawmakers voted to fund expansion of IRS
Leigh also mentioned that Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz almost instigated a brawl on the House floor after a confrontation with the California congressman. According to a
Breitbart report, Alabama Rep. Mike Rogers was on the brink of going after Gaetz during the 14th round of voting. Other GOP lawmakers, however,
managed to restrain the Alabama congressman.
The
Breitbart report named North Carolina Rep. Richard Hudson as one of the congressmen who intervened to diffuse the tension. As Rogers leaned over to get in the Florida congressman's face, Hudson came behind Rogers and put his hand over the Alabama lawmaker's mouth to restrain him. The North Carolina congressman then pulled his agitated colleague away.
The podcast host mentioned that McCarthy's first House bill will repeal funding for 87,000
Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agents. But she mentioned that 27 GOP lawmakers voted in favor of the $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill that includes funding to expand the tax agency. The approval of the omnibus spending bill, Leigh remarked, was tantamount to the GOP and the Democrats betraying American taxpayers.
She also cited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who, according to her, was "happy" about McCarthy getting the speakership.
The Ukrainian leader was quick
to congratulate McCarthy and, at the same time, issue a not-so-discreet reminder to keep the funding for Ukraine going.
"Congratulations to [McCarthy] on his election as the Speaker of [the U.S.] House of Representatives," Zelensky tweeted. "U.S. support in all fields has been vital for Ukraine's success on the battlefield. We're counting on your continued support and further assistance to bring our common victory closer."
