Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) recently revealed evidence that Hunter Biden and his uncle James Biden
cashed in on a forgivable zero-interest loan from a Chinese energy company.
In a statement, the lawmaker said the
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) possesses pieces of evidence regarding this claim. Among them was an email showing that CEFC Beijing International Energy Co. Ltd. fully understood that the transaction would benefit the Biden family.
The July 26, 2017 email sent by a CEFC official to Tony Bobulinski – Hunter Biden's business partner that time – stated that the company's bigwigs "fully support the framework of establishing the [joint venture] based on their trust" in the Biden family. Independent news outlet
Just The News managed to obtain a copy of this email during the same month and, according to Grassley, CEFC paid $5 million to the SinoHawk firm linked to the presidential son in August 2017.
According to the news outlet, the email was written in part to explain why there had been delay in sending a wire to SinoHawk. It elaborated that the delay was caused by several concerns on the part of the Chinese firm, including how clear is the positioning and strategy of the joint venture between SinoHawk and CEFC; how the $5 million interest-free loan will be utilized; if CEFC will continue lending more capital to the Bidens once the $5 million is used up; and what the interest rates are for the subsequent loans, in case the company continues to lend.
CEFC official Raymond Zhao, the one who sent the email to Bobulinski, said the transaction was already raising worries with the company's compliance officers at the time.
"Because of the reasons above, the risk management department of CEFC is showing concern on the operation of SinoHawk, hence the delay of the wire," he explained.
Hunter, James threatened to cut off support
In an Oct. 17 correspondence to the FBI, Grassley divulged more details about the CEFC loan. He explained that the scheme "to compensate the Bidens was supposed to consist of an unsecured $5 million loan, intended to be forgivable, from CEFC in 2017."
The GOP lawmaker also cited information from his office, saying that a few months before the $5 million was paid, "Hunter Biden yelled at CEFC officials at a meeting for failing to fund the joint venture." Grassley added that James Biden considered calling CEFC officials and threatening to withdraw Biden family support from future deals.
"After Joe Biden left the vice presidency, the summary makes clear that Hunter Biden and James Biden worked with CEFC and affiliated individuals to compensate them for that past work and the benefits they procured for CEFC."
Grassley noted that based on his interview with Bobulinski, the $5 million did not go to the SinoHawk entity after it was paid out. Rather, it was sent to a Biden family-connected firm called Hudson West III before finally being transferred to entities tied to Hunter and James.
According to the senator, the evidence his team has assembled from whistleblowers and other sources suggests the FBI "possesses significant, impactful, voluminous evidence of
potential criminality in Biden family business arrangements." (Related:

"Based on allegations provided to my office, the information provided by Bobulinski formed a sufficient basis to open a full field investigation on pay-to-play grounds. However, it is unclear whether the FBI did so and whether the information is part of the ongoing criminal investigation," Grassley said.
