Promotional video urges "confused" teens to delay puberty using chemical hormone blockers
A new promotional video by the non-profit Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF) drew flak for telling "confused" teenagers
different ways to delay puberty, including taking hormone blockers.
According to a
NewsPunch report, the video addresses teenagers who believe they may be intersex – a person born with a combination of both male and female biological traits.
"Your gender identity is real. You should be the one to decide what changes you want to make to your body,"
PPAF pointed out in the video clip.
"If you are transgender or nonbinary you may find that your puberty experiences do not line up with your gender identity or how you see yourself. That feeling can be uncomfortable, scary and stressful. Some people decide on hormones or surgeries to help their bodies match up to their gender identity or how they feel inside about themselves."
The video explained that puberty blockers "work like a stop sign by
holding the hormones testosterone and estrogen that cause puberty changes like facial hair growth and periods." However, this immediately aroused various negative reactions as these drugs that suppress puberty could cause innumerable detrimental side effects.
The
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert back in July regarding the puberty-blocking agent gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist following reports of children suffering from
brain swelling and vision loss after taking the hormone treatment.
Moreover, the American College of Pediatrics warned that GnRH can also aggravate gender dysphoria and may cause mental illness, including "depression and other emotional disturbances related to suicide."
But PPAF insisted that they are harmless, despite disclaimers from health authorities and doctors' groups.
"Puberty blockers are safe and can give you more time to figure out what feels right for you, your body and your gender identity," the ad claimed. "You don't have to have all of the answers right now. So, remember, it is all a work in progress. And it may take time to figure out what feels right to you." (Related:

"De-transitioned" teens regret changing genders
Massive promotional efforts such as the PPAF advertisement convey a "detrimental message" to children, especially to those who may not be with their parents, guardians or trusted friends at the moment they view it. They may decide by themselves and then regret major "transitional" decisions in the long run – just like what happened to Chloe Cole from California.
At 12 years old, Cole decided she was transgender. At 13, she was put on puberty blockers and prescribed testosterone. At 15, she underwent a double mastectomy and less than a year later, she realized she'd made a mistake.
Now, Cole would like to spread the message and
her cautionary tale.
She is now 17 and a part of "de-transitioners," a group that seeks to reverse a gender transition after realizing they actually do identify with their biological sex. The sad thing is that the decision they made as minors have irreversible medical consequences.
Experts worry that many young people seeking to transition are undergoing the process without a proper mental-health evaluation.
Dr. Erica Anderson, a clinical psychologist specializing in gender, sexuality and identity and a transgender woman herself, has helped hundreds of young people navigate the transition journey over the past 30 years. But she's worried that some young people are being medicalized without the proper restraint or oversight.
"I am concerned that the rise of de-transitioners is reflective of some young people who have progressed through their gender journey very quickly," she said, adding that medical professionals would be failing the children if issues important to a child are not fully addressed.
