Unsecured southern border allows illegal drugs like fentanyl to pour into America
The state of America's southern border is closely related to how better or worse the country is handling the opioid crisis, as Mexican drug cartels take advantage of the porous nature of the border to smuggle in
millions of dollars worth of drugs each year.
Much of the illegal drug smuggling that occurs along the southern border enters through gaps in former President Donald Trump's unfinished border wall. A
Drug Enforcement Administration intelligence report from 2020 found that the recent influx of fentanyl into the country comes from far more diverse sources than in 2014 when the fentanyl crisis first began.
During the first nine months of the 2022 fiscal year alone,
Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents in southern California seized more than 5,000 pounds of fentanyl. This represents about 60 percent of the 8,425 pounds of fentanyl that have so far been intercepted throughout the country. (Related:

"A decade ago we didn't even know about fentanyl, and now it's
a national crisis," said U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman. "The amount of fentanyl we are seizing at the border is staggering. The number of fentanyl seizures and fentanyl-related deaths in our district is unprecedented."
One of the latest massive drug busts at the southern border occurred on Aug. 26, when CBP agents seized 187 pounds of fentanyl worth $4.3 million. This is enough fentanyl to cause over 42 million Americans to overdose.
Rise in fentanyl deaths can be blamed on the open southern border
During Overdose Awareness Week in August, President Joe Biden proclaimed that the overdose epidemic has taken a "heartbreaking toll on our nation, claiming the lives of far too many Americans and devastating families and communities across the country."
"Every loss is a painful reminder that now, more than ever, we must address our nation's overdose epidemic," he said. But this proclamation didn't come with any commitments to address border security.
The Republican Study Committee, a group of GOP members of the House of Representatives, noted that Biden's loose border policies
have exacerbated the fentanyl crisis.
"It's really unfortunate the Biden administration is not acknowledging that this because of them opening the border on Jan. 20, 2021," said Rep. Tom Tiffany of Wisconsin. "My concern here is that, as a result of their actions on the border, they feel they can't acknowledge part of what happened over the border, which is a flooding [of fentanyl] into the United States."
Rep. August Pfluger of Texas noted that his district's proximity to the border gives him a clear view of the issue, and he has no doubt the flooding of fentanyl into America is because of Biden's loose immigration laws.
"It's affecting all my colleagues. Some of the issues with illegal immigrants are more concentrated in districts like mine, but the issue of fentanyl is everywhere," said Pfluger.
