British Columbia won't pay for maternity leaves of UNVAXXED mothers working for the province
Mothers working for Canada's British Columbia (BC) province who refuse the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine
are no longer entitled to maternity leaves – and are even ordered to pay those leaves back.
Back in November 2021, the provincial government announced its vaccination policy. It stipulated that "BC Public Service employees who do not receive two doses of vaccination against COVID-19, or refuse to disclose their vaccination status, and do not have an approved exemption request, are to be placed on leave without pay for a period of at least three months." Unvaccinated employees on unpaid leave could then face termination.
Typically, mothers on maternity leave are paid around 80 percent of their regular salary. However, unvaccinated mothers without a valid exemption may be forced to forfeit maternity benefits. In some cases, they may even need to pay up to CA$50,000 ($38,605) in maternity pay.
Those affected by the policy lamented the BC government's unfair treatment of them.
"At this point, it would just be punitive if I lose my job," said one woman who chose to remain anonymous. "It's like they want to make examples out of people. It is absolutely cruel in a country like Canada." (Related:

A second woman, meanwhile, said she is not eligible for employment insurance as she did not get the COVID-19 vaccine. As a result, she is facing the prospect of having to refund her maternity pay.
Another said she's facing maternity leave repayment and is not eligible for employment insurance because she did not get the COVID-19 vaccine. "I believed I was providing security for my family, I had a permanent position to return to," she said.
She also explained that with a newborn, mortgage and other bills, her family had little savings that have been ripped out of their hands.
Mothers on maternity leave unaware of BC government's vaccine rules
For mothers with the BC Public Service whose maternity leaves began October 2021, they decided to accept the provincial government's top-up benefit. Under the benefit scheme, they would be paid about 80 percent of the usual salary for their position. They also expected that they would return to their jobs on a set date.
If they quit, find another job or otherwise miss their return date – which cannot be postponed – they will be liable to pay back the entirety of the top-up benefit. This could cost the mothers between CA$20,000 ($15,436) and CA$50,000 ($38,605).
However, BC's vaccine mandate requiring employees to get the shots as a condition for hiring or continued employment took effect on Nov. 8, 2021. The mothers on maternity leave had no idea that the government's policies and the terms of their employment could change, as they were busy taking care of their newborn children.
A representative from BC Public Service said unvaccinated employees can apply for and be granted an exemption. But the process is handled on a case-by-case basis with no deviations to the policy, they added.
The vaccine mandate puts mothers on maternity leave in a precarious situation. If an unvaccinated mother applies for and is denied an exemption, they could miss their return-to-work date and be held liable for the entire top-up benefit amount they received.
Moreover, it appears that unvaccinated BC public sector employees on leave are better off not going through all that trouble. The COVID-19 vaccine they are being forced to receive does nothing to prevent transmission and infection, while compromising their fertility and general health at the same time.
