  • In 2024, 40 percent of suspects in violent school crimes in Germany were foreign nationals, with Syrians and Afghans making up the largest groups among them.
  • Authorities recorded over 35,500 violent incidents in schools last year, including 740 knife attacks, with total school-related crimes reaching 94,318.
  •  Cases involving youth suspects rose 3.8 percent, while offenses involving children under 14 jumped 11.3 percent, indicating a troubling trend among younger age groups.
  • Fourteen federal states, including Bavaria and Hesse, also reported year-on-year increases in school violence, confirming the nationwide scope of the issue.
  • AfD MP Martin Hess blamed mass immigration and Germany's multicultural policies for the violence, calling for stricter border controls, tougher deportation measures and a complete policy shift.
New government data has revealed that foreign nationals made up 40 percent of all suspects in school-related violent crimes across Germany in 2024. The figures, released by the federal government in response to a parliamentary inquiry by Alternative for Germany (AfD) MP Martin Hess, reveal that 4,254 of the 11,558 total suspects identified in violent incidents at German schools last year were foreign nationals. Syrians topped the list with 1,236 suspects, accounting for roughly 10 percent of all cases. Afghans followed, making up 3.6 percent of all suspects. The remaining 7,309 suspects were German citizens. In total, Germany recorded 35,570 violent crimes in its school system in 2024 — an average of 97 per day. Of those, 740 involved knives, meaning more than two knife attacks occurred at schools each day. When all school-related crimes are considered, including theft, vandalism and threats, the total jumps to 94,318. School events such as field trips and plays accounted for an additional 24,292 incidents, including 284 more knife-related cases. (Related: Germany: Nigerian migrant grabs 9-year-old boy and stabs 2 police officers, immediately released by the courts.) Violent incidents among youth more broadly have also surged. In 2024, nearly 31,400 cases involved young people, a 3.8 percent increase from the previous year. Among children under 14, the rise was even sharper– 11.3 percent, totaling more than 13,700 cases. Meanwhile, 14 of Germany's federal states have independently reported increases in school violence. Though their combined figures (around 27,000 cases) are lower than the federal count, they still mark a rise of 1,500 cases compared to 2023. For instance, Bavaria reported an increase from 2,645 cases in 2023 to 3,002 in 2024, Hesse saw a jump from 1,734 to 2,038 cases, and Brandenburg recorded a rise from 1,333 to 1,583 cases. Similar trends were noted in Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony, Saxony and Rhineland-Palatinate. However, critics of current crime classification methods point out that individuals with a migration background are often categorized as "German" if they hold German citizenship, even in cases of dual nationality. This, they argued, obscures the full picture of demographic patterns in school violence.

Hess links rise in school violence to mass immigration

The figures have reignited calls from the AfD party for a tougher stance on immigration. Hess, a former police instructor, blamed the "multicultural experiment" for the deteriorating situation in schools. Hess has drawn a direct line between the country's immigration policies and the worsening situation in schools. "These worrying developments are a direct result of the irresponsible mass immigration of recent years. Anyone who allows millions of culturally alien young men into the country and believes that integration will happen on its own is endangering internal security and social peace," Hess said. He also urged the federal government to impose stricter immigration controls, more aggressive deportations of foreign offenders and a reevaluation of Germany's multicultural approach. "We need effective border controls, the decisive deportation of criminal foreigners, and an end to the ideologically motivated multicultural experiment," he said, adding that the state must "once again be a sanctuary for citizens, not an educational project of left-wing utopians."
